In order to maximize local benefits, the RCM mandated Internet Papineau to operate the fibre-optic network, once finalized. The 100% local Internet service provider is already developing the most affordable Internet packages possible, for which they will provide customer service and technical support.
By entrusting the operation of the network to a local Internet service provider rather than a telecommunications giant, the RCM assures that the project will have a major and sustainable economic impact in the region. All of the profits generated by Internet Papineau will be reinvested in the community’s infrastructure, while generating fifteen quality technology jobs here at home. In 2005, faced with the difficulties of obtaining service agreements with the major telecommunications companies, the RCM of Papineau took the initiative of developing its own high-speed Internet network and founded its own non-profit corporation, a pioneering model in Quebec.
For nearly 15 years, Internet Papineau has been the 100% local Internet service provider, serving 26 municipalities; 24 in the Papineau RCM and 2 in the Collines-de-l’Outaouais RCM, l’Ange-Gardien and Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. With the main objective of reducing the negative impact of the digital divide that characterizes the region, Internet Papineau wants to provide citizens, stores and businesses within its territory with high-speed, low-cost Internet.
